It started with an American icon and an Italian point of view.
Inspired by the Converse sneaker, Buttero introduced Tanino in 2009. Its name? Borrowed from My Name Is Tanino, a film about an Italian boy, an American girl and the unexpected encounters between two worlds.
With its roots firmly in the world of boots, Tanino marked a new chapter for Buttero. Our first sneaker of the modern era, bringing a different attitude to the same recognisable character.
The idea was to take something familiar in an entirely new direction, guided by our own craftsmanship and sensibility. Italian leathers, raw-cut edges, leather laces and particular attention to the way a shoe feels, as much as the way it looks.
Seventeen years later, Tanino is still unmistakably Tanino. Different materials, new interpretations and a constant curiosity have kept it moving, while its original character remains.
The leather is never quite the same twice. And that's precisely the point.
Vegetable tanning is a centuries-old technique that uses tannins of natural origin to give leather its distinctive character. A material appreciated for its depth of colour, rich texture and the way it evolves over time.
For Tanino, leather is more than a choice of material. Its natural variations and tactile quality are essential to the character of the shoe.
With wear, vegetable-tanned leather gradually softens and develops a natural patina, revealing subtle changes in tone and texture. The more you wear them, the more character they acquire, becoming unmistakably your own.
Some details may be small, yet they make all the difference.
Raw-cut leather edges, leather laces, brass eyelets and two distinctive hand stitches. Elements that have defined Tanino's character since its very first edition in 2009.
The exposed edges reveal the natural thickness and texture of the leather, while the leather laces and brass eyelets bring an unexpected contrast. Two stitches, sewn by hand with waxed thread, hold the upper together, turning a functional necessity into one of Tanino's most recognisable features.
Underneath, a sole made from genuine rubber by Margom in Italy completes the construction, combining the expertise of Italian rubber manufacturing with Buttero's traditional shoemaking.
Tanino comes in three shapes, and each has its own way of sitting on the foot.
Underneath all three, a genuine rubber sole, made in Italy.
